John 21 Part 2

May 5, 2025

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” - John 12:15

Failure can feel like a definitive end, a stark disqualification from any meaningful purpose in God's kingdom. Yet, the profound narrative of Peter's restoration in John 21 offers a different perspective: failure is not the conclusion, but often the very ground zero where divine grace initiates and fuels our mission. Discipleship, rightly understood, isn't a status earned by the qualified or a demanding task for the flawless; instead, it is a life empowered by a personal encounter with God's restorative grace and profound renewal. The resurrected Jesus didn't dwell on Peter's threefold denial, but met him with love and recommissioned him, saying, "Feed My lambs," "Tend My sheep," and "Feed My sheep". This demonstrates that even significant failure does not preclude significant service when met by divine grace. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) tells us, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new". God's grace is sufficient not only to forgive our transgressions but also to heal our wounds, restore our purpose, and empower us for meaningful service within His kingdom, transforming our brokenness into a powerful testament to His relentless love and strength made perfect in our weakness.
