Are You Sealed by the Spirt?
Sealed and Secure: Understanding Your Inheritance in Christ
Dr. Spencer R. Fusselman
The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, penned from a prison cell, is a masterpiece of triumphant hope. In it, he outlines the glorious spiritual realities that belong to every believer. The passage of Ephesians 1:7-14 functions as a spiritual bill of sale, detailing the infinite price, Godly purpose, and unbreakable proof of our inheritance in Christ. Understanding these truths is not merely an academic exercise; it is meant to transform how we live, moving us from spiritual anxiety to confident joy.
The Price of Our Inheritance: Redemption by His Blood
Paul begins with a declaration of staggering scope: “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7). The word “redemption” (apolytrosis) means to be bought back or set free. It signifies a ransom paid in full, a transaction so complete that the debt is forever settled.
The price for this freedom was not silver or gold, but the "precious blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1:18-19). This was an exchange of infinite worth, given freely "according to the riches of His grace". This grace (charis) is not a passive concept; it is the active, empowering, and unmerited favor of God. It is the overflowing generosity from His infinite treasury, not a reward for our worthiness.
The Purpose of Our Inheritance: Our Role in God's Plan
Our personal salvation is not an end in itself but part of a grand, cosmic purpose. Paul writes that God has "made known to us the mystery of His will... to gather together in one all things in Christ" (Ephesians 1:9-10). In the Bible, a "mystery" (musterion) is a sacred secret, once hidden but now graciously revealed by God.
The content of this mystery is God’s ultimate plan to reverse the fracturing effects of sin and bring all of creation—heaven and earth—back into harmony under the rightful headship of Jesus Christ. This gives our lives profound meaning. When believers pursue peace and unity within the church, they are actively participating in and displaying the very plan God is working out in the universe.
The Proof of Our Inheritance: Security in His Spirit
How can we be certain this inheritance is truly ours? Our assurance is not found in our own strength but in the sovereign work of God, certified by the Holy Spirit. Our inheritance is secure because it rests on God’s unchanging purpose, not our fickle feelings.
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
The journey into our eternal inheritance follows a clear, sovereignly established path laid out in Scripture: a person first hears, then trusts, and is subsequently sealed. It all begins with hearing "the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation". This is the necessary starting point—the proclamation of Christ's redemptive work. In response to this truth, a person must trust, and believe, placing their personal faith in the finished work of Jesus. At that very moment of belief, the Creator acts decisively. He seals that person with the Holy Spirit, who serves as His sacred mark of ownership, security, and a finished transaction. This sealing is not something we achieve, but something we receive. The Spirit Himself becomes the arrabōn (ἀρραβών)—the sacred guarantee or down payment—assuring us that the full inheritance God has promised is reserved and will one day be ours.

Living as a Purchased Heir
This heavenly seal is not merely a static mark of ownership; it is the beginning of a dynamic, lifelong transformation. The indwelling Holy Spirit actively works to guide, nurture, rebuke, and correct, with the ultimate goal of conforming the believer to the image of Christ. The tangible evidence of the Spirit's invisible work is the fruit He produces in a believer's life. Love, joy, peace, and self-control are the living proof that a person is truly owned by God. This glorious reality challenges us to live differently
Let the reality of your guaranteed inheritance in Christ dismantle your fear, fuel your worship, and transform your life. The only proper response to such a gift is a life of profound gratitude and confident joy, lived completely and freely, all "to the praise of His glory"
- Rest in Your Identity. Stop trying to earn what has been freely given. Your forgiveness was purchased completely by Christ’s blood, and your self-worth is found in Him alone, not in anything you can manufacture.
- Find Security in the Seal. Your assurance is not based on your fluctuating emotions but on the objective work of God. You have been "sealed with the Holy Spirit," God’s divine down payment in your life that guarantees He will finish what He started. This is the ultimate cure for spiritual insecurity.
- Cultivate the Fruit. The Spirit is at work in you, but you can "grieve" Him through sin or "quench" His fire through disobedience. This leads to spiritual coldness and powerlessness. When we feel powerless, it is likely a sign that we are walking in the flesh and need a "heart check".
- Embrace Community. We are part of a community of heirs. When a fellow believer is struggling, our role is to "restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness," which reflects God’s own redemptive heart and our call to build unity in the body of Christ.
